Saul Leiter, 90, has made an enormous and unique contribution to the world of art and photography. His innovative, abstract compositions and painterly approach to early colour photography set him apart from his contemporaries in the 1950’s. Along with his personal work, he established a highly successful career in fashion photography, spanning over 20 years, for publications such as Esquire and Harper’s Bazaar. Saul Leiter began and continued his artistic career as a passionate and prolific painter, producing decades worth of delightful brightly coloured abstract works built up in delicate layers of watercolour and gouache. His photography and painting have continually influenced each other, and come together beautifully in the form of his painted photographs – mostly female nudes – embellished with his signature palette and style. Saul’s work can be found in the permanent collections of galleries and museums worldwide, and is the subject of a wonderful 2013 documentary, In No Great Hurry – 13 Lessons in Life with Saul Leiter, made by British film-maker Tomas Leach.
ArtHamptons features a dedicated exhibition of Saul Leiter’s intimately scaled work at HackelBury Fine Art, Stand 100-101. Saul will be present to receive his ArtHamptons Lifetime Achievement Award at the booth on July 12, Noon-1pm, when he will also be interviewed by Prof. Ann Chwatsky, Photography Dept., New York University.
